Where are you from?
I live on Cape Breton Island, North Eastern Coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.
Why did you want to become a Photographer?
I wanted to become a photographer simply because I love it. I’ve seen a lot of crap in my career as a Paramedic. When I have my camera in my hands it’s my way to ” get away “. Studying light, seeing it a different way…..the constant hunt for the next image. Plus…..playing with electronics is always fun 🙂
Why did you choose this particular shot to be your favorite photograph?
My all time favourite image that I’ve created – I understand that sometimes as artists our vision of our own work can be glazed by how much we love it. That being said, I really still do love this image. No matter how many times I stepped away from it, when I came back, it still brought me right back to where I was when I took it. This was photographed in a placed called Mabou Coal Mines, The Western side of Cape Breton itself. It was early spring and the drift ice was just beginning to separate. This ice was located at the bottom of a steep cliff ( of course ) but I seen the image in my head before I took it. I had no choice but to scale the cliff to get the shot. When I finally made it down, it was like I entered a different world. Imagine it if you will, a large cliff behind me and nothing but this in front of me. There were no other sound besides to deep thumping of the ice bumping together, and the smell……was so…so fresh. It was surreal. I spent about a half an hour properly setting up the shot and waiting for just the right moment. took my shots, packed my gear ( knowing I was going home with a gem ) and then just sat there, to enjoy this beautiful moment.
Anything else you want to add?
if people are looking for a beautiful, rugged yet peaceful place to capture, come to Cape Breton Island. Go off the beaten path and explore. There is always another image just around the corner.
