Where are you from?
I’m from a small town in rural West Wales, but I currently live in Andalusia, Spain. Over the past ten years I’ve spent most of my time travelling and working in a number of countries including the USA, Canada and several countries in Africa.
Why did you want to become a Photographer?
Through my travels I developed a passion for photography and capturing the beauty and diversity of landscapes, peoples and cultures I was seeing.
Why did you choose this particular shot to be your favorite photograph?
I have chosen this photo of a Ghanaian woman as my favourite photo because I feel it highlights the plight of women in Ghana who suffer in silence the ravishes of HIV and abject poverty. With no money to buy food or life-saving antiretroviral treatment, and forced to keep her condition a secret from even her closest family members due to the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS in Ghana, this woman, Alimatu, suffered alone through the final stages of AIDS. I met her on a recent trip to Ghana while I was carrying out a project I’d created to provide mattresses to a group of HIV positive women who receive support from a community based organisation I am involved with. Shortly after I visited her she lost the battle against AIDS.
